Station wagons are one of the many, still-remaining, but dwindling throwbacks to an earlier automotive era. The long-roof design used to be much more widely available back when every company made a range of sedans, but that isn’t the case anymore. Despite the rise in SUV popularity, there are still a few automakers that have stuck with the wagon design and the benefits it provides: namely the combination of utility and the efficiency of a car platform. If you like the lower seating position of a car, then wagons are a great alternative to SUVs.

We’ve assembled every station wagon available in 2022 in the US market. Read on to see what’s available.

Audi

2022 Audi A4 Allroad

When it comes to style and refinement, Audi consistently makes some of the best vehicles on the road. The 2022 Audi A4 Allroad sticks with that reputation, but serves up a slightly-lifted take on the iconic Audi wagon silhouette. The A4 Allroad comes with a turbocharged, four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and more rugged-looking bodywork than the standard A4. The wagon boasts 24.2 cu.-ft. of cargo space with the rear seats up (almost as much as the Audi Q5 crossover) and an impressive 58.5 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded.

Audi

2022 Audi A6 Allroad

If you want something a little more powerful than the A4 Allroad, then stepping up to the 2022 Audi A6 Allroad is a move in the right direction with a 335-hp V6 and 30 cu.-ft. of cargo capacity behind the rear seats. The A6 takes all of the refinement of its sedan variant, and adds the rugged styling elements of the allroad, including a slightly higher ride height. If the extent of your off-roading is dirt roads and snow, then an allroad is a solid choice against SUV competitors.

Audi

2022 Audi RS 6 Avant

Audi has made several iconic super station wagons over the years, though most of them have remained overseas in the wagon-favoring European market. One we’re lucky to be able to buy is the 2022 Audi RS 6 Avant. This isn’t the lifted Allroad variant, either, but rather an aggressively-styled wagon with a 591-hp, twin-turbo V8 under the hood. According to Audi, the RS 6 Avant is capable of sprinting to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph, or 190 mph if you get the optional carbon ceramic brakes.

Mercedes-Benz

2022 Mercedes Benz E 450 4Matic All-Terrain

Though Mercedes-Benz still makes and sells quite a few wagons overseas, the last traditional long-roof standing in their US lineup is the E-Class. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic All-Terrain features all the luxurious appointments of an E-Class, plus all-wheel drive versatility and a turbocharged inline-six engine that makes 362 hp. The E Class features a slightly lifted style that is reminiscent of the Audi Allroad models, including black plastic cladding around the fenders. The roomy Benz packs an impressive 64 cu.-ft. of cargo capacity with the rear seats folded down. The 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat can still accommodate a constellation of cargo, with 35 cu.-ft. of room with the seats up.

Mini

2022 Mini Clubman

The Mini Clubman takes all the fun and style of the hardtop (which probably comes to mind when you think of “Mini Cooper”) and stretches it out into wagon form. In addition, the Clubman has a nifty set of rear barn doors that open outward instead of up like the traditional liftgate style on most wagons. This Mini comes in a few different trims, from the basic Cooper S, to models with all-wheel drive, and even a hopped-up, John Cooper Works version that makes 301 hp and can scoot to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. Cargo capacity is 17.5 cu.-ft. behind the rear seats and 47.9 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded.

Porsche

2022 Porsche Panamera 4 Sport Turismo

The Porsche Panamera provides a versatile platform for a handful of body styles, including a wagon. The Panamera 4 Sport Turismo marries the sleek styling of the best European long-roofs with the power and capability for which Porsche is known. The price walk for the Panamera in wagon guise goes from just above $100,000 to over $200,000, but buyers can get a veritable supercar at the top end: 690 hp, a 3-second 0-60 mph time, and a top speed of 196 mph with the Turbo S E-Hybrid model. Even with that kind of power, the Panamera Sport Turismo still boasts 14.7 cu.-ft. of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, or 45.4 cu.-ft. with them folded.

Porsche

2022 Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo/Sport Turismo

The all-electric Porsche Taycan comes in three different body styles, like the Panamera, but with two similar wagons to choose from. The Cross Turismo can be thought of as the more rugged version, similar to the Volvo Cross Country models or the Audi Allroad. The Taycan Cross Turismo has distinctive black cladding that helps distinguish it from the similar Taycan Sport Turismo. The Sport Turismo is largely the same as the Cross Turismo, but with a more road-going style. Both Taycan wagons can fit 15.8 cu.-ft. of cargo behind the rear seats, or up to 42.8 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded.

Subaru

2022 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback, alongside the Volvo lineup, is easily one of the most well-known wagons. Even though Subaru calls it an SUV these days, the wagon silhouette is unmistakable, so we’ve included it here. The rugged Subaru Outback is the last of the Japanese automaker’s cars available in the classic body style, but it’s a capable vehicle nonetheless. With just 182 hp on tap from the four-cylinder engine, the base Outback is outclassed in power by everything else on sale in the segment, but it makes up for that by being the most affordable wagon, too. If you need a bit more power there’s an optional 2.4L turbocharged engine that makes 260 hp on XT and Wilderness trim models. All Outbacks get all-wheel drive as standard equipment, a minimum 8.7 inches of ground clearance(9.5-inches on Wilderness models), and an impressive 32.5 cu.-ft. of cargo room behind the rear seats, as well as 75.7 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded.

Volvo

2022 Volvo V60 Recharge/Cross Country

Volvo is perhaps one of the most famous wagon-makers, and they still sell several models. The Volvo V60 comes in two flavors: Cross Country and Recharge. The Cross Country is equipped with a turbocharged engine that makes 250 hp, while the Recharge sports a plug-in hybrid system good for 415 hp. The Cross Country wears black plastic cladding, and with more than 8 inches of ground clearance, it can back up its off-roading looks with some capability. The Recharge not only has more power, but also 22 miles of all-electric range. In either form, the V60 has 18.3 cu.-ft. of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, or 31.4 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded.

Volvo

2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country

The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a bigger, roomier version of the automaker’s stylish S90 sedan, but with enhanced ground clearance to go with its wagon-infused capability. The powertrain is made up of a mild hybrid system and a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that’s both supercharged and turbocharged, which is good for a total of 295 hp. Unlike the V60 Recharge, the V90 Cross Country is a mild hybrid, which uses a smaller battery that can’t power the car independent of the gas engine. The biggest Volvo wagon can carry an impressive 53.9 cu.-ft. of cargo when the seats are folded, or 19.8 cu.-ft. with the seats up.
