The two-row 2025 Mazda CX-70 and CX-70 plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) models build on the foundation laid by the closely related three-row 2024 Mazda CX-90 and CX-90 PHEV. Mazda offers two powertrain options for the new CX-70 models: a hybridturbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder PHEV.

The CX-70 PHEV is available in only two trim levels, compared with the CX-70's five, but there are other key differences to note. Here's how the two stack up in three key areas.

The CX-70 PHEV's Price Exceeds the CX-70's

Mazda offers a range of trims for the CX-70, with pricing starting at around $42,000 for the base 3.3 Turbo Preferred model. All CX-70s come with a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six that produces 280 horsepower, while the available S model boosts the output up to 340 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard on both CX-70s.

The CX-70 PHEV comes in only Premium and Premium Plus trims, two of the higher variants from the standard model line. Pricing for the CX-70 PHEV Premium starts at around $56,000, a significant upcharge over the most basic CX-70.

That money buys quite a few features, however, including selectable driving modes, a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds, and a bose premium audio system. The SUV is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery pack, making a combined 323 horsepower.

Both SUVs Get Robust Safety and Infotainment Features

While the CX-70 PHEV line starts higher up the trim ladder, the basic CX-70 is well equipped, with tech and comfort features aplenty. It comes standard with black leather upholstery, automatic climate controls, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat.

Infotainment features include a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, wireless phone charging, front and rear USB-A inputs, and an eight-speaker audio system.

The CX-70 PHEV Premium builds on those features with a power panoramic sunroof, a Bose 12-speaker stereo, four USB-C ports, satellite radio, and three-zone automatic climate controls. It also adds a head-up display for vehicle speed and other information.

A PHEV Helps the CX-70's Fuel Economy

The Mazda CX-70 PHEV offers an all-electric range of 26 miles, which gives it the ability to function without fuel for short periods. Unlike EVs, the PHEV functions like a traditional hybrid once it exhausts the electric range. Mazda also quotes an estimated 56 MPGe on a full charge.

Mild hybrids tend to be slightly less efficient than traditional hybrids, but their electric motors do boost fuel economy over pure gas engines. Per Mazda's estimates, the CX-70 with the 280-hp engine returns 24/28/25 mpg on the EPA's city/highway/combined test cycles, but it's worth noting that the S variant drops the city figure to 23 mpg.
